The Tower of London
, is a historic castle on the north bank of the River Thames of central London. Built between 1078 and 1399 by the Normans in Britain. It is a World Unesco Heritage Site since 1988.
A year before, in May 1987, I visited the Tower of London. I used my memories to write a scene in my novel Souvenir :
Tatiana walked to the Tower of London. Built by the Normans during their conquest of England, this castle and former prison were also used as an observatory by King John Flamsteed’s royal astronomer and now housed the crown jewels and other valuables. Swords of gold so pure as if they had never witnessed any tragedy. The ruby on the crown was actually a bloody gift from Pedro the Cruel of Seville. The humanist Sir Thomas More was also imprisoned in the Tower and beheaded because he had not consented to the marriage of his king Henry VIII Tudor to Lady Ann Boleyn. Later, Lady Ann Boleyn suffered the same fate.
"Tower of London" thought Tatiana, "Treasures and cruelty!"
When she saw the great crows in the gardens, she remembered a legend:
“It is said that the kingdom and tower of London will fall if the six resident crows leave the fortress.”
La Tour de Londres, est un château historique sur la rive nord de la Tamise du centre de Londres. Construit entre 1078 et 1399 par les Normands en Grande-Bretagne. Il est un site du patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco depuis 1988. Un an auparavant, en mai 1987, j’ai visité la Tour de Londres. J’ai utilisé mes souvenirs pour écrire une scène dans mon roman Souvenir

Tatiana marcha jusqu'à la Tour de Londres. Construit par les Normands lors de leur conquête de l'Angleterre, ce château et cette ancienne prison furent également utilisés comme observatoire par l'astronome royal du roi John Flamsteed et abritaient à présent les joyaux de la couronne et autres objets de valeur. Des épées d'un or si pur comme si elles n'avaient jamais été témoins d'aucune tragédie. Le rubis de la couronne était en fait un cadeau sanglant de Pedro le Cruel de Séville. L'humaniste Sir Thomas More fut également emprisonné dans la Tour et décapité parce qu'il n'avait pas consenti au mariage de son roi Henry VIII Tudor avec Lady Ann Boleyn. Plus tard, Lady Ann Boleyn subit le même sort.
« Tower of London » pensa Tatiana, « Trésors et cruauté !»
Lorsqu’elle aperçut les grands corbeaux dans les jardins, elle se souvint d'une légende :
« On dit que le royaume et la tour de Londres tomberont si les six corbeaux résidents quittent la forteresse. »
